That deadly sting

Am back
with vengeance
heard did not see
what they said
of the 'sudu neluma'
with hopes and dreams
of budding youth
to bring justice to a world
she yearned to see right
lay silent silenced
shattered with a single sting
no! hundred stings
of men and women blind
in seats warm with comfort
waiting for treasury funds
to make things right
when a thousand hands
brought together with purpose
not empty words just action
not slogans on the street
could make that right
leadership we teach
share well we preach
lead please lead to let
yet other lotus bloom
to let that justice
she longed to see
flower for her soul to rest
and those like her to hope
that they can see

Renton de Alwis wrote this poem 0n 10th June 2013, having heard of the death of the Law Faculty student of the Colombo University of Dengue she contacted at the lecture hall. He heard of this on the radio, recuperating from his cataract surgery last week.
