I could ....

by Renton de Alwis

I could sing of love
of roses and daffodils
had seen and smelt
in those well laid gardens
of little England and Hakgala,
or of food I see, in photos
in glossy magazines and ate
at Ape Gama, Mango tree,
KFC or McDonalds
I could write of happiness
of masks on faces
of fat kids I saw the other day
partying with Santa hats,
branded helium balloons
yelling at mother,
in her Sunday best,
But, let me...
sing of the running noses
of those street kids
the want, the pain,
yearning for something,
anything, that comes
topped with a little
cream of love.
