Words of Wisdom from the father of Taoism, Lao Tzu – 3rd set of quotes

නායකයකු නියම නායකයකු වන්නේ, ඹහුට/ ඇයට පැවරැණු කාර්ය ඉතා මැනවින්, වැඩි ඝෝසාවකින් තොරව කරවා, ඒවා අවසන නායකයා විසින් මෙහෙයවූ මිනිසුන් “අප ඒ කාර්යන් කලා”යැයි උදම් අනන විටය.

 

My friends... you would have gone through the introduction, the first and second set of quotes of Lao Tzu in my earlier posts in this series. This is the 3rd and I will have to continue this series after a break of about a week or two for I have to undergo eye surgery a little later this week and will be asked to rest.

You will find today's quotes very relevant when it comes to focussing our thoughts on our rulers, leaders and ourselves, the citizenry.

Having lived and worked in Southeast and East Asia, I was always interested in seeking the wisdom of the ancient Chinese sages, which I am sure was also a part of the knowledge base available to Gauthama The Buddha during his life time. His thoughtful and caring sieving of this knowledge together with that of the Indian Brahamin tradition, in my mind, is the outcome of the philosophy, the way of life and the religion we have for our benefit.  With the advent of the Western dominant thought we began to see  most of the gems of Asian ancient wisdom only with academic interest and began seeking the way based on seeking and fulfilling unlimited wants and feeding our greed.

The objective in presenting this series is to focus attention to this body of knowledge available to us. with the hope that we may .... our leaders and us ordinary citizens impacted by what they do and where they take us to think afresh.

Please do not think of my post as and expose on religion but as an attempt to make clearer the way we see our life and the way forward for our economic social and cultural development.
 

I present two more verses from the Tao Te Ching, translated as the Law (or Canon) of Virtue and it's Way, belonging to 6th Century BC,  with its Sinhala translation by me.

 

 

From above it is not bright;
From below it is not dark:
Unbroken thread beyond description.
It returns to nothingness.
Form of the formless,
Image of the imageless,
It is called indefinable and beyond imagination.

Stand before it - there is no beginning.
Follow it and there is no end.
Stay with the Tao, Move with the present.

ඉහලින් බැලූ විට ප්‍රභාවක් නැති සේය
බෑවුමින් ඉහලට අඳුරක් දැකිය නොහැකිය
මෙවැනියැයි වැනිය නොහැකි අඛන්ඩවු නූලක් මෙන්
එය හිස්බවට පිවිසෙනු ඇත.
හැඩයක් නොමැති හැඩයකි එය
රැවක් නොමැති රැවකි එය
මේයැයි නිරවුල්ව කිව නොහැකි හෙයින් මේයැයි සිතා ගත හැකි නොවේ.

ගොස් සිටගන්න ඉදිරියෙන් - පටන් ගැන්මක් නොමැත.
හඹා යනු මැන එහෙත් අවසනක් දකිනු නැත.
රැඳෙනු හා ඒ සමග, වත්මනේ වැජඹෙන්න.

Why are people starving?
Because the rulers eat up the money in taxes.
Therefore the people are starving.

ඇයිද මිනිසුන් හාමතේ?
පාලකයින් උන් සතු ධනය බදු ලෙසින් ගන්නා බැවිනි
එලෙද මිනිසුන් හාමතේ.

Why are the people rebellious?
Because the rulers interfere too much.
Therefore they are rebellious.

ඇයිද මිනිසුන් කැළඹිලා?
පාලකයින් උන් කරනා දෙයට ඇඟිලි ගසනා නිසා
එලෙද මිනිසුන් කැළඹිලා.

Why do people think so little of death?
Because the rulers demand too much of life.
Therefore the people take life lightly.

මිනිසුන් ඇයිද මරණය ලඝු කොට සිතන්නේ?
පාලකයින් උන්ගේ ජීවිතවලින් පමණ ඉක්මවා ඉල්ලීම් කරන නිසා
එලෙද මිනිසුන් දිවිය වටනේයැයි නොසිතති.

Having to live on, one knows better than to value life too much.

ජීවත් වන නිසා, ජීවිතයේ අගය අධි තක්සේරැ නොකිරීමට උන් වග බලා ගෙන ඇත.
