මතකද පොල්පිති ගොනා ? .................. Polpithi Gona

     

ඔයගොල්ල බෝහෝ දෙනෙකුට මතක ඇති පුංචි කාලෙ සෙල්ලම් කරපු මේ පොල්පිති ගොනා. පහුගිය නිවාඩු කාලෙ දවසක මා දැක්ක මාවැල්ලෙ මාමා, වත්තෙ සෙල්ලම් කර කර හිටිය පොඩිටයි, දෝණිටයි  ලස්සන  පොල්පිති ගොනෙක් හදල දීලා තිබුන. ඒකයි, ඊට කලින් සුමානෙ, කොළඹ ඉඳන් එනකොට කහවත්ත හරියෙදි තරැණයෙක්, එයාම හදලා විකුනන්න පාරදිගේ ඇද ගෙන ගිය, ඒකෙ රඟට රහ වැටිලා, මම පුංචි උන්ට ගෙනත් දීපු, ටක ටක ගාලා, යනකොට බෙරයක් නාද වෙන සෙල්ලම් කරත්තෙයි දෙකම, අර චීනෙන් ගෙනත් විකුනන විච්චූරන සෙල්ලම් බඩු වලට වඩා උන්ගෙ හිතට අල්ලල තියෙනවා දැක්කම, මට සතුටු හිතුන. සොබා දහමට අවනත මේ සෙල්ලම් බඩු, තන්හාව නිවලා, පුංචි උන්ගෙ හිත්වල පහන් හිතුවිලි ඇති කරනව නේද කියලත් හිතුන. මට ඇහුන මාවැල්ලෙ සීය ඒ දෙන්නට කියනව, පස්සෙ කුරැම්බැට්ටි කට කට යන්තරයක් හදා දෙනව කියලා ,,,,

How many of you will remember the "Polpithi Gona"? Made out of the top portion of a coconut branch? Made of things natural it is a lovely toy for kids. I saw that, Mawelle (Sirisena) Seeiya had made two of those for little Podi (Kavya) & Doni (Kithmy) and they loved it. They learnt so much about nature, of cows, bulls and milk and goma... They momentarily forgot the few more colourful imported plastic toys they had and were enjoying these for a few long hours... To add to that was an innovation of a cart made of throwaway tins by a youth near Kahawatta, I had got them on my last return trip from Colombo. The cart had a little drum that beats on its own when pulled...

Lovely lessons on creativity and innovation for our kids... Is this not development of the hearts and minds of our kids and their love for nature?  We waste resources in making more 'sophisticated' toys that only go to grow their greed, making them slaves of greed and wasteful ways.  I overheard Mawelle Seeya telling them that he will  next make them a 'Kurumbetti Rattle'.
